Andrew William Chen, BS

Andrew Chen is a doctoral student in the Therapeutic Ultrasound Lab. Originally from Somerset County N.J., Andrew received his BS in 2015 with a double major in Physics and Mathematics from Dickinson College in Carlise P.A. A desire to apply his degree to advance and improve healthcare lead him to the BME program at GW. Andrew's current work focuses on therapeutic ultrasound applications on the heart and pancreas and investigating the possibilities of these applications through fluorescent imaging of tissue slices.

hanaa almogbil

Hanaa Almogbil, BS, MS

Hanaa is a Ph.D. Candidate in Biomedical Engineering in her third year. Hanaa got her BME MS degree at GW (class of ‘18) and her Bachelors in Biochemistry from King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia, Jeddah. Hanaa works on many projects that are focused mainly on Therapeutic Ultrasound in Enhancing Macromolecules Ocular Delivery in Cornea and Sclera.

john hill

John Hill, BS

John is a PhD student in Biomedical Engineering. He graduated with an B.S. in Human, Nutrition, Foods and Exercise from Virginia Tech. He is currently working on projects related to gene expression and ultrasound stimulation with human pancreatic cells.

Maggie schoonover

Maggie Schoonover, BS

Magdeline (Maggie) is a first-year Ph.D. student here at GWU. She is from Fort Worth, Texas and a southerner at heart. She completed her undergraduate degree at Manhattan College in New York City, majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in mathematics. Her passion for Biomedical Engineering came about as she worked on undergraduate biomedical focused research, which she presented at the 2019 iMechE conference in Salt Lake City. Outside of school and work, Maggie enjoys golfing with her grandfather, running, exploring restaurants in DC, and spending time with friends and family. Maggie is currently working with Dr. Zderic on using therapeutic ultrasound to improve insulin release from the pancreas.

claire allison

Claire Allison

Claire Allison is a junior Biomedical engineering major with a minor in electrical engineering from Costa Mesa, California. She is a Clare Boothe Luce Scholar and is actively involved in two projects in the Zderic lab, recently completing a project using therapeutic ultrasound to enhance transcorneal drug delivery for treatment of fungal keratitis. Her current work is studying the efficacy of therapeutic ultrasound in treating Retinoblastoma alongside thermally sensitive liposomes. 

 

giavanna corazza

Giavanna Corazza

Giavanna Corazza is a senior majoring in biomedical engineering with a double minor in mechanical engineering and political science. She first got involved with Dr. Zderic's therapeutic ultrasound laboratory in January 2020 and has since gained skills in technical writing, benchwork, and grant proposals through her work with Hanaa Almogbl on an ocular drug delivery project and her collaboration with Julia Stern on developing experimental procedures for applications of therapeutic ultrasound in the thyroid. Outside of academic research, Giavanna is heavily involved in the GW campus community. She has a strong passion for empowering women in the STEM field to utilize their voices to create change. Two of the many ways she works to put this goal to action is by serving as the Vice President for GW Society of Women Engineers and  as an active member of Alpha Omega Epsilon, a social-professional engineering sorority dedicated to creating a sense of community among women in the engineering and technical science community. Giavanna also currently serves as the Director of George Hacks, a student organization focused on interdisciplinary healthcare innovation, after successfully participating in their 2019 Medical Solutions Hackathon and accelerating that venture project to become one of the Top 9 Finalists of 217 teams at the 2019 GW New Venture Competition. Inspired by her experiences with entrepreneurship and innovation, she has spent Summer 2021 working as a Venture Analyst Intern at FedTech, a Washington, D.C.-based venture builder that has been extremely successful in launching and accelerating deep technology across NASA, the DoD, the DoE, universities, and federal labs since its inception in 2015. Within five years, she hopes to make an impactful contribution to the intersection of innovation and federal affairs. 

annette jimenez

Annette Jimenez

Annette Jiménez is a sophomore born and raised in Santiago, Dominican Republic. She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, potentially minoring in electrical engineering. Annette currently serves as the secretary of the Society of Hispanic Engineers, is involved in the Biomedical Engineering Society and the Clark Scholars Program. Annette is eager to explore DC, GW, and all the growth opportunities it has to offer.

Julia Stern

Julia Stern is a Junior studying Biomedical Engineering pursuing the Pre-medical track. She is from upstate New York originally, but splits time in the city as well. She is currently working on using Ultrasound to detect hormones released by the thyroid gland to potentially treat thyroid related diseases. Julia also works in Mark Reeves lab focusing on mapping Aerosols in indoor spaces. You can also find her in the Electrical engineering department working as a Lab Tech. In her free time, Julia is a member of the GW polo team and also enjoys equestrian sports as well as cooking and trying all of D.C.'s new restaurants.

Blake Cellum

Blake is a senior majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Electrical Engineering. Blake is from Houston, Texas and has joined our lab in May 2019 to work on ultrasound-enhanced ocular drug delivery. He has also worked at Curative Inc. since the beginning of the pandemic doing PCR testing for Covid-19 and is a part of SEAS Together Outreach Committee.
